Biovo Technologies is an innovator and manufacturer of disposable medical devices for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. Biovo announced today that the company was granted a patent covering a closed suction system with an integrated cleaning mechanism by the UK Patent Office. The new technology will be on the market in Europe later this year under the brand name Airway Medix (http://www.airwaymedix.com).
The Airway Medix Closed Suction System is designed to effectively clear biofilm buildup and secretion accumulation from the inner lumen of the endotracheal tube, thus maintaining an unobstructed airway during the entire period of mechanical ventilation. The patent covers a unique mechanism that employs simultaneous operation of fluid jets, suction, and a balloon that clears the inside of the tube while the debris is removed by suction.
“A common, and occasionally fatal, complication in the ICU is the introduction of microbial pathogens into the lower respiratory tract that causes infections. During mechanical ventilation, biofilm and secretions build up inside the endotracheal tube and serve as an incubator for bacteria. The passive closed suction systems employed today do not do a good job of removing this buildup, allowing bacteria to proliferate inside the artificial airway” says Mr. Elad Einav the CEO of Biovo. “Our system is a major development; it allows the caregiver to maintain a clear airway, which, in turn, may reduce the pathogenesis of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) as well as decrease the patient’s work of breathing”.
This is the second patent granted by the UK Patent Office to the Airway Medix product line for ventilated patient care. The first patent covers the replacement of the commonly used inflatable cuff on endotracheal tubes with a self-expanding sleeve.
