Lifetime of Achievement in Assuring Food Safety Recognized by IAFP
USP Board Member Receives President´s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Robert Buchanan, Ph.D., United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Board of Trustees At Large member, was honored with the International Association for Food Protection´s (IAFP) President´s Lifetime Achievement award. According to IAFP, the award is given to “an individual who has made a lasting impact on Advancing Food Safety Worldwide® through a lifetime of professional achievements in food protection.” Dr. Buchanan is a professor and director at the Food Safety and Security Systems at the University of Maryland, College Park and is currently serving a five year term on the USP Board of Trustees. USP is a nonprofit scientific organization that develops standards to help ensure the identity, strength, quality and purity of food ingredients, dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals.
USP´s chief executive officer Roger L. Williams, M.D., said of the award, “Dr. Buchanan´s distinguished career in food safety, spanning many years of government and academic service, is what makes him such a valuable member of the USP Board of Trustees and is also what makes him deserving of this lifetime achievement award. I commend Dr. Buchanan on his accomplishments and congratulate him on receiving this distinction.”
During the course of his career, Dr. Buchanan´s research interests have ranged from predictive microbiology, quantitative microbial risk assessment, microbial physiology, mycotoxicology, and hazard analysis and critical control points systems. He is also one of the co-developers of the widely used USDA Pathogen Modeling Program which can be used to predict the growth and inactivation of food borne bacteria, primarily pathogens, under various environmental conditions. Dr. Buchanan received the award at IAFP 2012 in Providence, R.I.
