Addiction Medicine Pioneer Dr. A.R. Mohammad Launching Awareness Campaign About Recent OxyContin Formula Change and the Unforeseen Effects
Addiction medicine expert Dr. A.R. Mohammad seeing spike in heroin abuse on the heels of Oxycontin formula modification
Malibu, California (PRWEB) July 30, 2012
Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon, a drug rehab center near Los Angeles, recognized by many as one of the top drug and alcohol rehab treatment centers in California, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California, announced today that he and his team will be launching an extensive awareness campaign about the recent formula change to the frequently abused prescription painkiller OxyContin. In an effort to dissuade abusers from snorting and inhaling the painkiller, manufacturers made the pills much more difficult to crush and dissolve, which greatly inhibited inhaling and injecting the opiate. While the formula change succeeded in making the pills more difficult for addicts to abuse, the formula adjustment also succeeded in driving an alarming amount of OxyContin abusers to the streets for heroin, which is a horrific trend on several levels.
Dr. Mohammad said, “While the original intention of the formula shift was positive, the resulting effects have been very disconcerting. Abusers were certainly deterred by the inability to readily crush and dissolve the pills; however, addicts quickly found a workaround for the issue“¦abusing street-grade heroin or more potent opioids.” Mohammad added, “The reality is that street-grade heroin is an unstable and deadly drug that is always cut with something questionable by the dealers before reaching the buyer, which poses an even more significant threat of overdose. A staggering number of former OxyContin abusers are turning up in hospitals and morgues after misjudging the amount of heroin to ingest and frequently overdosing. Not only do the addicts need to be aware of the potential dangers of switching to heroin purchased on the street, but addiction professionals need to share the information with their respective communities.”
Dr. Mohammad and the Malibu Horizon drug rehab treatment center´s team will be launching their awareness campaign during the team´s upcoming educational summit for addiction experts. Mohammad added, “When the addiction community is confronted with situations like this, it is imperative that we share the information between colleagues and work together to inform the masses. When a slight change in a painkiller formula creates a spike in the consumption of heroin, there is obviously a significant issue that must be discussed and thoroughly examined at once.”
