Addiction Medicine Pioneer Dr. A.R. Mohammad Launches Campaign To Stop Abusive Drug Treatment Practices In The U.S.
Addiction Treatment Expert Dr. A.R. Mohammad Speaks Out Against Treatment Models That Incorporate Abusive Practices Into Their Routine
Malibu, California (PRWEB) August 10, 2012
Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon, recognized by many as one of the top drug rehab treatment centers in California, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California, announced today that he and his team will be launching an extensive awareness campaign to stop the mistreatment of addicts in various facilities around the country that promote harsh treatment of addicts in the form of extreme measures like boot camps, wilderness camps, discipline campaigns, etc. In spite of countless complaints from respected treatment experts, only recently have California legislators moved to regulate private boot camps for teens in response to a widely circulated video of youths in one such program, who were forced to perform tasks under great physical and emotional duress.
Dr. Mohammad said, “There is not one shred of evidence to support the notion that harsh treatment helps to effectively address or even remotely treat addiction appropriately. It is beyond tragic that an alarming amount of U.S. programs incorporate these abusive tactics into their treatment methods and until now have avoided scrutiny.” Mohammad added, “Would anyone in their right mind treat Diabetics by sending them to a boot camp? As absurd as that sounds, addicts are being exposed to abusive conditions daily in an effort to treat their disease through misguided behavior modification tactics. My team and I will no longer stand for those practices and plan on starting a very public conversation about the damaging and even deadly impact that harsh treatment environments are having on patients across the nation. Too many of these patients come to Malibu Horizon and need to literally be deprogrammed, then treated with proper medical attention for addiction; it must stop!”
Dr. Mohammad and the Malibu Horizon´s team will be launching their awareness campaign during the team´s upcoming educational summit for addiction experts. Mohammad added, “Addiction is a disease and must be properly treated by a medical expert, not disciplinarians. Facilities engaging in these questionable treatment practices are doing so in direct opposition to the science, evidence and ethics. While it is promising to know that California legislators are taking a more active role in regulating questionable treatment practices, patients are being abused and mistreated as you read this. We are choosing to do something about it and are confident that other reputable and credible addiction experts will support our efforts.”
