Orlando, Florida (PRWEB) August 28, 2012

Gannett Fleming has been recognized by the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) for its work on the Interstate 4 (I-4) Bridges Spanning Reedy Creek project in Osceola County, Fla.

As part of its 2012 Engineering Excellence Awards program, FICE presented Gannett Fleming with a Grand Award for the firm´s engineering on the project, which demonstrated a high degree of achievement, value, and ingenuity.

The project was undertaken by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 5 as a result of inspections that revealed the twin bridges to be scour critical. One of the primary causes of bridge failure in the U.S., scour is the erosion around bridge piers and abutments caused by flowing water. As the engineer of record for the project, Gannett Fleming provided FDOT with the final design for the installation of a supplemental substructure system for the bridges.

Gannett Fleming´s design solutions overcame three critical FDOT challenges: they minimized traffic disruptions so the highway could remain open to traffic at all times, with limited lane closures; they reduced environmental impacts to Reedy Creek; and they completed the project on an accelerated schedule while significantly reducing costs.

Innovative engineering eliminated the potential for reduced structural capacity and instability due to extreme scour, and as a result, minimized the amount of resources needed for future monitoring of the bridges.
