Monotype Imaging is pleased to be a Gold sponsor of Telematics Japan 2012 — Asia´s largest telematics conference. With the issue of driver distraction gaining attention, automotive manufacturers and suppliers are looking for ways to develop intelligent HMI (human-machine interface) solutions while minimizing driver demand. Initial results of an exploratory study show certain type styles can reduce glance time — the time away from watching the road when driving while interacting with in-vehicle displays.

–New findings from a study, http://bit.ly/MITAGE, that links typeface style with reduced driver distraction risk
–A look at how the average duration of glance time per subject decreases when using typefaces optimized for the driver´s short glance patterns
–When and where typeface design attributes quantifiably alter legibility, which affects rapid content search and information retrieval
Full results of the study are available in an MIT AgeLab white paper, http://bit.ly/MITWP, in addition to the video, http://bit.ly/MITVI, that highlights the research and its findings. Portions of the study will be presented by the MIT AgeLab at the Automotive User Interface (AutomotiveUI 2012) conference in Portsmouth, N.H., Oct. 17-19, where Bryan Reimer, research scientist at MIT AgeLab and one of the principal researchers of the project, is scheduled to speak.
