In a recent article published by Natural Health Sherpa, Jonny Bowden identifies what he calls “5 little demons” that make us “sick, fat, tired and even depressed.”

Addictive Food

The first “little demon” Dr. Bowden identified was addictive food. Some foods are — Bowden claims – “as addictive as drugs, alcohol and gambling.”

“Big Food has learned how to layer their products with just the right, scientifically determined amounts of salt, fat and sugar to produce [addictive food],” Bowden stresses.

Realizing that they are somehow being manipulated can help consumers resist addictive but fattening food, according to Bowden.

Food Labeling Tricks

Next on the list is “food labeling tricks.” Jonny explained that manufacturers are required to list the ingredients with the largest amount first.

“They deceive you by using a dozen different forms of sugar so they can list each one further down,” Bowden points out.

The Brain´s Reward System

Dr. Bowden calls the third item on his list “the troll in your brain.” He means that the reward pathways in the brain are powerful. This dopamine reward system, according to Bowden, undermines one’s willpower. He says thinking of the urge to eat junk food as a troll can help people to avoid getting fat.

Chronic Stress

Stress signals the body to release cortisol. Cortisol, in turn, tells the body to store fat. It also tells the body to acquire more fuel. This results in more fat stored in the middle area, according to Jonny Bowden. He suggests minimizing stress through yoga, meditation or deep breathing.

Cheap Food

The problem, according to Dr. Bowden, is that “food that makes us fat and sick” is always available and easy to acquire. “The easiest way to combat this toxic food environment is to remove temptation from your immediate environment so it´s NOT convenient,” says Jonny Bowden.

Natural Health Sherpa provides in-depth, science-based, independent reviews of natural health therapies and remedies that have been proven to be both safe and effective and are backed by good science — multiple double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized studies. Unfortunately, there are many charlatans making bogus, unfounded claims in the natural health area, so our goal is to separate fact from fiction to pinpoint what actually works.
