Dr. Roehrig to Focus on Strategic Product Development for Volpara Breast Density Measurement Software

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (PRWEB) April 17, 2013

Matakina International, leaders in the development of objective volumetric measurement of breast density, announced that breast imaging pioneer Jimmy Roehrig, Ph.D. has joined Matakina, providing scientific depth to the U.S. sales effort, and strategic planning for product development and intellectual property.

“After knowing Ralph Highnam and Mike Brady for many years, nothing gives me more pleasure than helping Matakina further develop applications using volumetric breast density measurement that can have tremendous impact on breast imaging,” said Roehrig. “I first became aware of their research at Oxford many years ago while I was developing algorithms for Computer Aided Detection at R2 Technology. The appeal and value of their work was immediately obvious, not only because it was based on sound physics, but also because it demonstrated what I still believe to be a philosophically correct approach to understanding the structure of the breast.”

Roehrig, who co-founded R2 Technology, served as Chief Science Officer and was responsible for building the technical team that produced the ImageChecker® computer aided detection (CAD) system, the first CAD system approved by the FDA. As Vice President of Advanced Development, Dr. Roehrig led the development and refinement of R2´s proprietary algorithm for the earlier detection of breast cancer and managed efforts to apply the technology to other diseases. Upon the acquisition of R2 by Hologic, Inc, Dr. Roehrig remained until 2012, working primarily in the field of quantitative DCE MRI for breast imaging.

Prior to R2 Technology, Dr. Roehrig held engineering and management positions at Acuson Corp., Xonics Imaging, Lockheed Palo Alto Research Labs and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. He received his B.A, M.S, and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the University of Chicago, and his MSEE from the University of Santa Clara.

“Pioneering several technologies that have transformed breast imaging, Jimmy Roehrig is truly one of the leading scientific minds in the industry and we are extremely pleased that he has agreed to apply his expertise to the continued development of the Volpara breast density software,” said Ralph Highnam, PhD, CEO of Matakina International.

Designed to help overcome the limitations of mammography to detect cancer in women with dense breasts, Volpara generates objective, automatic measurement of volumetric breast density values along with a BI-RADS Breast Density Classification for mammograms acquired from any commercially available digital mammography system.

Cleared by the FDA, HealthCanada, the TGA and CE-marked, Volpara is in use at sites across the globe helping radiologists assess breast density more objectively and helping them better consider who might benefit from additional screening. Volpara is a reliable tool which generates objective, automatic measurement of volumetric breast density and a FDA cleared BI-RADS breast density category. Volpara supports most of the major digital mammography systems, can be displayed on digital mammography and PACS workstations and be integrated into mammography reporting systems.

Breast tissue density has not only been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, it also decreases the sensitivity of the mammogram and thereby may impact early detection. Thirty-five percent of breast cancer goes undetected by mammography in women with dense breasts, as density masks the appearance of tumors (Boyd et al 2007, NEJM). Since both dense breast tissue and cancer appear white on a mammogram, finding cancers can be analogous to looking for a snowball in a snow storm.

About Matakina

Founded to enable radiologists to give women the most accurate information possible regarding their breast health, Matakina International, Limited is the wholly owned sales and marketing arm of Matakina Technology Limited of New Zealand. Volpara´s founders and Board of Directors includes John Hood, PhD, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford, UK; Ralph Highnam, PhD, former CEO of Mirada Solutions, one of the University of Oxford´s most successful spin-outs of recent times and co-author of the seminal book Mammographic Image Analysis; and Professor Sir Michael Brady, a serial entrepreneur who recently retired from the University of Oxford where he was Professor of Information Technology for 25 years.
