Water and Health Researcher Sharon Kleyne, Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, on Preventing Summer Dry Eye

Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) June 06, 2013

Summer is a high risk season for eyes, warns water and health researcher Sharon Kleyne. Summer sun, according to Kleyne, brings warmer temperatures and more intense solar radiation. This can result in increased tear film evaporation, eye dehydration and dry eye discomfort. The best eye protection from summer sun, says Mrs. Kleyne, is water.

The protective tear film covering the cornea, Kleyne explains, is 98% water. When too much of this water evaporates, the moisture loss and dehydration can set up an inflammatory process resulting in discomfort, blurred vision, itching and burning eyes, fatigue and stress.

As Founder of the Bio-Logic Aqua Research Center, Sharon Kleyne has been studying water, health, the environment and the best eye protection from summer sun for three decades. Bio-Logic Aqua Research bottles the product Natures Tears® EyeMist®. As part of Mrs. Kleyne´s commitment to education, she has hosted the syndicated talk radio show Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water since 2007. The show is heard live or by podcast on VoiceAmerica, Apple iTunes and Green Talk Network

Dry eye and tear film dehydration are more prevalent in summer for several reasons, says Kleyne. Water evaporates faster under higher temperatures. Exposure to direct solar radiation is increased. People spend more time outdoors and perspire more. There are also, in summer, more irritating allergens in the air, such as pollen, that can dehydrate the tear film. Indoor air, from air-conditioners, fans, etc., can be equally dehydrating in summer.

Mrs. Kleyne´s offers several suggestions to obtain the best eye protection from summer sun.

External hydration is as important in maintaining eye moisture (and skin moisture) as drinking water. To quickly supplement tear film moisture, carry Nature´s Tears® EyeMist®, 100% all-natural water with you. Apply before and after cleansing your face in morning and during the day whenever you experience eye discomfort.

Indoor humidity tends to be low in summer. Humidify your house by setting out bowls of water and by opening windows to let fresh air and humidity into the house, especially the bedroom.

Remember that baths detoxify and showers rinse. Apply sunblock after bathing or showering.

Cleanse your face daily with a warm washcloth and either liquid soap or a very mild cleansing cream or bar. Cleansing should include repeated very warm water compresses to the eyes and face. When the facial skin and eyelids are well hydrated, the eyes are more likely to remain hydrated.

Sunglasses and wide brimmed hats offer the best eye protection from solar radiation.
