High Temperatures in Los Angeles County Causing Ground Squirrels to Go into Estivation
Rodent Guys of Southern California reports Los Angeles County ground squirrels have gone into their underground burrows to estivate because of the extreme heat this weekend.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 29, 2013
Ground squirrels are rodents that burrow in the ground and eat vegetation, nuts and seeds as their primary diet in Los Angeles County. Because they eat landowners’ crops and vegetation they are considered a pest in California. Adding to the squirrels’ damage are the large holes made into the ground for their burrow entrances.
Los Angeles County ground squirrels live in colonies with as many as a few dozen squirrels living in the same burrow system. Ground squirrels typically have one litter per year with as many as 15 young per litter. Along with a low death rate, this makes them constant pests in Los Angeles County.
During the winter and high temperature summer days, the squirrels go into a cycle called estivation. This is similar to hibernation but is much shorter in time and can occur multiple times per year. Ground squirrels are known to be fair weather rodents and are not seen on high temperature days or peak temperatures of the day. Often times, they will be observed during the morning and evening foraging for food when the climate conditions are mild.
Controlling ground squirrels in Los Angeles County during the high temperatures we are experiencing this weekend will be of limited effect. Traps and baiting will have low efficiency because the ground squirrels will not come out of their burrows.
Waiting for temperatures to drop to treat for squirrels will increase ground squirrel control and make your efforts more fruitful. Gopher control and mole control will still be effective during this high heat weekend since those animals stay underground all the time and traps and bait are placed underground as well.
