IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Announces the Launch of the Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine
New open-access journal created to foster worldwide community around the sharing of knowledge about how to design, make, and test products for the betterment of human health.

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) today announced the launch of the Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine (JTEHM). The open-access journal was created to support the movement of biotechnological innovations from idea to clinical trials and ultimately to commercialization, and will foster global conversation and interdisciplinary collaborations on innovative translational research in health and medicine. By providing this critically important industry resource, EMBS endeavors to improve the practice of engineering in translational medicine and to serve as a focal point for the growing community.
Via its website, health.embs.org, JTEHM publishes cutting-edge biomedical engineering innovations that bridge the clinical and engineering worlds, along with a variety of interactive content including video, blogs, lively commentary, and other features. All of the work published in JTEHM shares a focus on solutions to healthcare needs from the biomedical engineering, clinical engineering, and medical communities. JTEHM publishes results and best practices from these translational efforts and serves as a community hub for researchers, clinicians, and developers who are addressing challenges in technology development, commercialization, and deployment for better global healthcare.

Such translational work is critical in moving the technology frontier into the clinical environment to improve clinical practice and human health,” said Clifford Dasco, MD, co-editor-in-chief and Professor of Cellular and Molecular Biology and Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Distinguished Research Professor, College of Technology, University of Houston. “Translation used to be covered under the phrase ‘from the bench to the bedside.’ Now we know that there is a far greater world beyond the bed.”
“The long pathway from technology innovation to clinical practice involves tremendous collaborative synergy among experts and researchers in basic and applied sciences, engineering, computing and information technologies, and biological, behavioral and medical sciences. It also entails the active involvement of entrepreneurs and investors along with leaders in industry, healthcare, and public policy,” said Atam Dhawan, PhD, co-editor-in-chief and Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Interim Dean, Albert Dorman Honors College, New Jersey Institute of Technology.
IEEE EMBS chose to offer JTEHM in an open-access format to maximize global readership, decrease time to publication, and increase the breadth of articles that are published. The journal’s open-source, continuous-publication platform allows multimedia presentation of clinically significant translational technology breakthroughs with editorial blogs and comments from experts, entrepreneurs, and clinicians. The papers published in JTEHM are accessible through IEEE Xplore and in downloadable PDF versions that will include additional material such as commentary and video. In the future, papers will also be indexed in PubMed.
Researchers are invited to submit papers with their research findings and clinical translation studies for publication in JTEHM. The editorial board also welcomes submissions from industry, policy makers, and the investment community.
