Twisted Arrow, Broken Blade and Pima Loops of the Table Mountain Campgrounds Closed by Los Angeles Dept of Public Health Because of Ground Squirrels with Plague

July 26, 2013

Los Angeles County Agriculture Deparment to dust for the control of fleas on California Ground Squirrels to prevent plague spreading.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 26, 2013

Twisted Arrow, Broken Blade and Pima Loops of the Table Mountain Campgrounds are closed starting July 24, 2013 because of ground squirrel fleas infested with the plague. This area near Wrightwood, CA is posted that no public access will be allowed for an expected 1 week period. Ground squirrel control of fleas will be done by dusting the area by the Los Angeles County Agriculture Department and further testing will be done.

Plague in ground squirrel fleas is not new to the San Gabriel Mountains. Back in 2010 ground squirrels with fleas were found in Gorman, CA and in 2007 and 1996 they were found near La Canada, CA. Human interaction in the area is of great concern because transmission of the bubonic plague comes from infested fleas biting humans.

Today antibiotics are used to treat symptoms of the plague which can be identified with fever, chills and enlarged lymph glands near the flea bite. If the symptoms are untreated it can cause an infection in the blood and can be fatal. Modern treatments will cure most cases today. Ground Squirrel removal in residential areas should be handled by professionals who know how to handle rodent control safely. Killing ground squirrels forces the fleas on the host animal to find a new host. Home owners are encouraged to not handle this type of pest control and to limit their interaction with these rodents.
