Students in the University of Western States’ (UWS) massage therapy program were recognized last week in a certification ceremony celebrating their completion of the program. UWS is the only Oregon university accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities that offers a massage program. The massage program is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation.

The 12-month program teaches students to evaluate clients individually and address their needs to improve mobility, reduce pain, manage symptoms, decrease stress, support existing medical treatments and enhance overall wellness.

“This is a great time to be a massage therapist,” said Peter Szucs, UWS’ interim dean of graduate and undergraduate studies. “Our graduates are prepared to work in private practice and in healthcare settings, and they’re ready to meet the increasing number of people who are seeking the therapeutic benefits of massage to reduce stress and alleviate pain.”

The Massage Therapy Program

The program offers specialized training to work with injuries, athletes, chronic pain issues and cancer patients. It is available at the UWS Portland campus in the evenings, and during the days at Chemeketa Community College campus in Salem. Courses include anatomical and physiologic training, practicums, massage techniques, communication and ethics. Students will have the opportunity to work with patients at the UWS Health Centers located throughout the Portland and Salem metropolitan areas, and through outreach events. Additional information about the program is available at http://www.uws.edu/Academic_Programs/Massage_Therapy.aspx. “Our students are eager to provide the highest quality of care, and contribute meaningfully to the wellness of their massage clients,” added Mr. Szucs.
