Tucson Embedded Systems Inc.’s (TES) iDEC unit has been successfully used to power Green Field Energy Services' hydraulic pumps completely by 100% field gas in Pennsylvania oil fields, for the first time in the history of the industry.

In 2012, Green Field Energy Services selected multiple units of TES’ iDEC system to power its Turbine Frac Pumps. These pumps have been successfully adapted to use TES’ iDEC system to run on 100% field gas, making it simpler for customers to convert from diesel to natural gas as a fuel source.

While iDEC systems have traditionally been used in avionics, the TES iDEC assembly is unique in that it adapts the use of turbines to be used in other industrial settings. In 2010, Tucson Embedded Systems developed and began manufacturing iDEC units for use in turbine-powered pumping equipment used in hydraulic fracturing operations, making it the first product of its kind. The iDEC system is designed and manufactured in the United States and has been recognized for its unique design and innovative engineering.

“TES' iDEC system provides multiple advantages over the diesel-powered pumping equipment traditionally used in our industry including significantly lower emissions, a smaller operating footprint, and greater fuel flexibility,” said David Crowe, president of TES. “We are proud to be pioneering the use of clean pumping technology in hydraulic fracturing.”

TES' universal iDEC unit offers enhanced engine control and safety system unique to power plants to improve reliability and expand drilling extraction methods, allowing turbines to run efficiently on natural gas or diesel fuel. The iDEC monitors and records all engine and pump details which aids in maintenance. The system also allows for remote monitoring in “Real Time” further aiding management with offsite supervision.

“With the help of Tucson Embedded Systems and their iDEC technology, we realized a level of success not seen before,” said Danny Foley, vice president of New Technologies for Green Field Energy Services. “TES has been a steadfast partner of Green Field throughout this journey and we appreciate not only their expertise, but also their professionalism in both planning and executing this achievement.”

TES' universal iDEC unit improves drilling extraction methods by allowing turbines to run efficiently on natural gas or diesel fuel compared to the industries traditionally mixed power. Based on current energy prices, by using 100% field gas instead of diesel, an operator can lower its fueling costs by up to 88%. In addition to environmental benefits, the iDEC unit reduces emissions and delivery traffic.
