Lawrence, KS (PRWEB) October 11, 2013

Allen Press, Inc., publisher and printing services provider, has released the 2013 Study of Subscription Prices for Scholarly Society Journals (http://allenpress.com/resources/education/jps).

The study, published regularly, summarizes historical prices of approximately 200 publications appearing in the Allen Press Buyer’s Guide to Scientific, Medical, and Scholarly Journals™. Several focus groups and industry studies also served as resources for assessing library budget trends, strategies libraries use for cost containment, content selection and cancellation criteria, access performance, and user behavior.

The study reports that pricing strategies for scholarly journals remain consistent and predictable, but the way libraries are evaluating and purchasing content is evolving. Serial price increases continue to outpace library budget increases, and libraries are still in a position of having to make difficult decisions regarding their collections in order to balance patron needs and budgets.

“The study is far more than just a tool to guide society publishers in setting prices for their publications. Our goal is to provide society and association publishers with an overview of the issues facing libraries and publishers and how librarians make collection decisions when faced with limited budgets,” Melanie Dolechek, Director of Publishing and Marketing, said. “We’ve highlighted a number of strategies that can help publishers remain relevant and sustainable.”

The free publication is now available on the Allen Press website at http://allenpress.com/resources/education/jps. You may also request a printed copy from the website.
