Air Pollution, Low Humidity Harmful to Eye Surface Health Reports Ophthalmology Professor
John Ng, MD on Ambient Water Vapor and Dry Eye for Bio Logic Aqua Research Founder Sharon Kleyne's Study Team on Health and the Atmospheric Environment
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) November 20, 2013
According to Ophthalmology professor John Ng, MD, humans depend upon a healthy environment for optimal health. Degradation of the environment, including dehumidification of the air due to decreased ambient water vapor pressure and/or increased particulate pollution, can negatively impact human health. Common health symptoms resulting from dry and polluted air include dry eyes, irritated nasal and oral passageways, headaches and lethargy. Dr. Ng presented these findings in a report for the Sharon Kleyne Study Team on Health and the Atmospheric Environment.
The Study Team’s objective, according to Kleyne and Ng, is research and education regarding the influence on human health of changes in atmospheric water vapor content. The Study Team’s intent is to stimulate discussions of the effects of climatic variation with the goal of bringing together multiple professional disciplines to improve the ability of humans to live with and adapt to a changing and increasingly dehydrating atmosphere.
John Ng, MD, is a professor of Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Opthalmic Facial Plastic Surgery at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, OR. Ng received his MD degree from George Washington University and has extensive career experience in military ophthalmology and eye reconstruction. .
Sharon Kleyne is Founder of Bio Logic Aqua Research, specializing in research, education, technology, and product development relating to fresh water, atmospheric water vapor, skin and eye dehydration and human health. Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, the Research Center’s global signature product, provides a pure, fresh water mist, applied with a personal, hand-held humidifying device, to instantly supplement depleted eye and skin moisture. Kleyne hosts the globally syndicated Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes.
The atmospheric humidity, according to Dr. Ng, is adversely challenged by industrial pollution, vehicular emissions, ozone depletion and secondary environmental changes. Additionally, artificial environments such as airline cabins and modern sealed buildings also result in changed micro-environmental conditions, including the “sick building syndrome.“ Studies show that changes in environmental water vapor pressure can adversely affect the health of the eye surface by increasing the evaporation of tears in lower humidity, thus disrupting the delicate balance required for moist healthy comfortable eyes.
One way to immediately and safely compensate for atmospheric changes, Dr. Ng explains, is by improving one’s personal micro-environment. Air filters can help remove airborne particulate pollution from our homes and work places. But some of these particles may also affect humidity, ozone levels and weather patterns. Re-humidifying dehydrated skin and restoring lost water vapor to dry eyes and other mucus membranes, can improve comfort and health.
Sharon Kleyne notes that the only eye care product that specifically addresses the problem of tear film moisture evaporation as a result of increased vapor pressure and low humidity is Nature’s Tears® EyeMist® from Bio Logic Aqua Research. According to Dr. Ng, the product provides a natural, preservative-free, fresh water micro-vapor or mist to humidify dehydrated eyes and compensate for an imbalanced atmosphere.
The sterile, portable product, says Kleyne, can be administered directly to the eyes without the employing a large volume of water. Since the sterile water contains no additives or preservatives, there are no potential irritants or allergens and no dosage limits.
