FossilEra, a startup specializing in the online sale of fossil specimens, has shipped over 300 orders in the first three weeks since launching.

The creation of long-time amateur paleontologist and fossil collector Matt Heaton, FossilEra aims to market fossils outside of the niche community of fossil enthusiasts. According to the founder, “Fossils have an appeal across a wide range of demographics for many reasons. Most of us grew up in awe of dinosaurs, and creatures that roamed the earth hundreds of millions of years ago. There are many people that would love to be able to hold a real, five-inch Megalodon tooth, have something cool from the past to display in their office, or give a dinosaur tooth as a gift to a child. FossilEra gives them the chance.”

Fossilera.com carries a diverse catalog of high quality fossil specimens acquired from wholesale suppliers around the world. They range from spiny trilobites from Morocco, ammonites from Madagascar, to fossil dinosaur teeth from Montana. Price ranges on items start as low as $10 and go up into the thousands of dollars. FossilEra provides an authenticity guarantee on all of the fossils they sell.

Much of the initial sales volume can be credited to the holiday gift buying rush. According to Matt Heaton, "Feedback from customers has indicated at least half of the specimens are being purchased as gifts." With less than a month of operation, FossilEra has already seen quite a few repeat customers who have made additional purchases after receiving their initial order.

FossilEra sees a large opportunity in a niche industry with nearly a billion dollars in annual sales and no dominate online retailer. Building on their initial sales traction they plan to rapidly expand their inventory and broaden their marketing campaigns in the new year.
