Open Window at Night Even in Winter Improves Benefits of Sleep Reports Health Researcher

The many physical and mental health benefits of a good night’s sleep are undisputed. According to water and health researcher Sharon Kleyne, the body repairs and rejuvenates itself while sleeping. Kleyne recently announced a list of suggestions to maximize the productiveness of one’s nightly sleep. One of the more interesting suggestions was to always keep a window cracked open in the bedroom and bathroom – even in winter.

“There is no question,” says Kleyne, “that the better one’s sleep, the more thorough the rejuvenation and the greater the health benefit.”
The only drawback to getting a good uninterrupted night’s sleep, according to Kleyne, is that it represents eight hours without water. Those hours, often in an insulated, low-humidity room, with trapped airborne bacteria and forced-air heating or cooling, can dehydrate the skin and eyes and rob them of critical moisture.
Night dehydration, says Kleyne, is the reason people often awaken with itching skin and crusty, bleary eyes. Tear production almost totally shuts down during sleep, Kleyne explains, resulting in a build-up of bacteria and toxins on the optical surface and eyelid. Saliva also nearly shuts down during sleep, causing the dehydration, dryness and bacterial build-up responsible for “morning breath.”
Kleyne urges making a habit of replenishing lost skin, eye, mouth and body moisture the moment one awakens. She offers suggestions to help avoid dehydration and water loss during sleep and replenishing moisture upon awakening.
First, according to Kleyne, leave a window open in the bedroom while sleeping and in the bathroom while showering and washing. This is beneficial no matter what the season or outside weather. This will create an atmospheric exchange with the outside and allow fresh, natural, oxygenated and humid outdoor air to enter the room. House plants, humidifiers and bowls of water will also help maintain room humidity.
Second, drink a large glass of warm or slightly hot water soon after awakening. Warm water is more quickly absorbed and is retained longer. This is the first of the eight daily glasses of pure water – in addition to all other fluid intake – that Kleyne recommends.
Third, Kleyne advises hot baths or showers that are lingering and enjoyed, remembering to deeply inhale the steamy vapor. Follow baths with a quick shower to wash off the bath residue.
Fourth, says Kleyne, apply repeated warm compresses to the face, with eyes open, while washing in the morning, beginning with a mild liquid soap and ending with just water. Wring out and rinse the compress between applications, and breathe deeply while it is on your face. If there’s no time for this, try a modification of the old barbershop technique of wrapping the face with a hot, wet towel – keeping eyes opened and deeply inhaling the water vapor.
Kleyne suggests concluding facial cleansing by applying a moisture-sealing lotion or make-up base. The ideal application will have a sunscreen factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
