New Enertia Green Solar House Models for the Next Polar Vortex

March 25, 2014

ENERTIA® CEO Michael Sykes announces three new Extreme EX models of the Award-Winning Green kit-home series, with beefed up thermal mass for more inertia, and reflective hidden internal surfaces like a thermos bottle. Because they are connected to the earth, and face the sun, Enertia homes can maintain livable conditions when there is no electricity, or fuel supply.

Few homes are ready for the next Polar Vortex, with power outages and shortages of heating fuel. These are real issues, that were felt by families as far south as Ohio this winter, and Sykes tackles them with an “Extreme” version of the innovative Enertia® Building System. The concept puts the living space into a “virtual” mild climate zone, with a unique double-shell technique. This false climate zone is created by earth-contact, and the sun, so no fuel or electricity is needed. For the vicious Polar Vortex conditions EX models implement a full house-within-a-house strategy, by doubling the East and West wall, as well as the North wall as is done in all standard Enertia models.

The new versions of Arcadia, Equinox, and Southern Pines carry Enertia’s house-within-a-house concept to the extreme while sticking to an economical easy-to-build kit form. Extreme weather events, high fuel costs, combined with increased factory productivity and faster assembly with the new Gluelam Green Building Blocks® are making this a more viable option. It adds but a small percentage to the package cost, little to construction time, and an even smaller percentage to overall cost. Nature (sun and earth) creates a false Texas climate for an upper Midwest or Canadian home. Extra wind, earthquake, and tornado resistance are a side benefit to the doubled-wall technique.

Many Enertia innovations have come from customer’s specific requests- like food-storage, and EMP protection features. In their previous homes they have suffered hurricane damage and power outages so they want their final dream-home to take care of them and protect their families, while having a normal profile from the street. With the geothermal connection through the basement, Enertia homes can maintain a traditional above-ground appearance.

Enertia has, for 25 years, been the leading innovator in housing- an industry whose techniques and materials are mostly stuck in the 1950’s. These homes are a totally new form of architecture, in both design and material, and introduced a new word to the language, “Enertia” which means energy from a shift-in-time. In 2007 the company’s innovative homes were named a Modern Marvel by the History Channel. Their fast lego-like construction method, and off-the-grid ability, have become legendary.
