Wheeling, WV (PRWEB) April 08, 2014

Ohio Valley Medical Center received a Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Breast Centers, acknowledging its dedication to providing exceptional patient care and treatment in the Ohio Valley.

By carrying the Women’s Choice Award seal, OVMC has signified its commitment to a global mission to elevate the patient experience for women and all patients as one of America’s Best Breast Centers.

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among American women according to the American Cancer Society, and one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime.

Breezie Ogilbee, Cancer Center Manager states, “We are devoted to the mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, friends and all women of the Ohio Valley! By striving toward accreditations and excellent patient care for the ladies served at our breast program, we ensure these women can take comfort in trusting us with their care. As an unsolicited honor, the Women's Choice Award for Best Breast Center solidifies OVMC's dedication to quality care.”

“Breast care is extremely vital to women’s health, and we want Ohio Valley women to know that OVMC has met the highest standards in caring for the needs of its female patients,” said Michael Caruso, president and CEO of OVMC and East Ohio Regional Hospital. “Through our nationally accredited Breast Center, our physicians and staff are able to screen, diagnose, and treat for illnesses in an environment that was also awarded the outstanding achievement award from the Commission on Cancer. OVMC is the only hospital locally that holds these awards.”

Ohio Valley Medical Center earned the Women’s Choice Award by having met the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) standards from the American College of Surgeons. The NAPBC is a consortium of national, professional organizations focused on breast health and is dedicated to the improvement of quality care and outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast through evidence-based standards and patient and professional education. As one of America’s Best Breast Centers, Ohio Valley Medical Center also carries the Seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and scored above average on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient satisfaction measures.

“The patient surveys conducted by multiple agencies is an objective testament to our high quality of care to all of our patients,” said Caruso.

WomenCertified, a leading advocate organization for female consumers, granted the Women’s Choice Award to OVMC. These top designations help women and their families by providing recommendations they can trust and use when making healthcare choices. Awards are based on surveys of thousands of women, as well as research conducted in partnership with a top-ranked university on what drives the consumer experience for women vs. men. WomenCertified created this first national award based on the ratings and preferences of women to provide them with a collective voice.

“We have found that recommendations are the single most important consideration used by women in selecting a hospital or cancer center,” said Delia Passi, CEO and found of WomenCertified. “By letting women know which breast centers in

their area are among America’s best, we are able to reduce risk by helping them make better decisions and smarter healthcare choices.”

Physicians at OVMC are the first to witness women’s experiences at The Cancer Center and credit the hospital’s high ranking to the team approach given to all patients.

"Everyone at our center works as a team — from the doctors and nurses to the patients. We are proud of this prestigious recognition and believe it is the outcome of our team efforts at The Cancer Center at OVMC," said Dr. Robert Cross, surgeon and Breast Committee Chair at OVMC and EORH.

"The physicians and staff at The Cancer Center at OVMC work hard to ensure all our patients have a comprehensive plan, resources and access to the treatment they need,” said Dr. Howard Shackelford, surgeon. “This award recognizes our hard work here, and we still believe the true heroes are our patients."

OVMC’s breast navigator believes this new award echoes the hospital’s commitment to its patients.

“Being included in this elite group demonstrates, yet again, the OVMC and EORH commitment to excellent breast health,” said Jane Kessler, registered nurse and breast care navigator.

Ohio Valley Medical Center, located in Wheeling West Virginia, and East Ohio Regional Hospital, located in Martins Ferry Ohio, are a 340-bed, combined organization with more than 1,600 employees. The hospitals provide the only comprehensive acute and board-certified emergency services on both sides of the Ohio River.
