Greg Gorbett, coordinator of the EKU Online Fire, Arson and Explosion Investigation degree program and associate professor in the Department of Fire Protection and Paramedicine Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University, traveled to South Korea during the last week of April to give a presentation on the use of computer fire modeling.
Gorbett co-presented with Dr. Young-Jin Kwon, professor of Fire and Disaster Protection Engineering at Hoseo University, as well as two faculty members from the Department of Forensic Science at the National Research Institute of Police Science in Japan.
The invitation was extended by Hoseo University and the Korea Fire Investigation Institute (KFII), which are collaborating to increase the reliability of forensic fire scene reconstruction in South Korea. During Gorbett’s visit, Hoseo University also signed a memorandum of understanding with EKU to encourage research and future plans.
Gorbett hopes his Korean colleagues can visit the Eastern Kentucky University campus within the next year.
“This is the second time that I have been invited to South Korea to present on the research and work being accomplished at EKU,” Gorbett said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to once again discuss the cutting edge research and vision that EKU has outlined for the fire investigation profession. I am also equally excited to expand our research interests with the representatives from Japan’s forensic science community.”
Gorbett was featured as one of the nation’s Top 15 Fire Investigation Professors by ForensicsColleges.com earlier this year. In a “60 Minutes” segment on a deadly hotel fire that aired in 2013, he was cited as one of the nation’s “top five fire experts.” Also in 2013, FireScience.org named the EKU faculty member in its list of the Top 10 Fire Science Instructors in the South.
