Philippine coast guard denies oil spill near Manila
MANILA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) — The Philippine Coast Guard Saturdaysaid the reported oil spill in the waters near Manila was not true,according to a report by local radio dzBB.
The report quoted Lieutenant Armand Balilo, a coast guard spokesman, as saying that a verification on the area by coast guard and environment officials “showed negative results”.
The coast guard earlier sent naval officers to Bataan province some 50 kilometers west to Manila to verify a report by police andlocal fishermen that an oil spill was caused by a Singaporean vessel.
Coast Guard Northern Luzon commander Commodore Luis Tuazon Jr said he sent his men on board a helicopter and a light plane to the site where the oil spill reportedly occurred.
The oil spill reportedly took place at a coastal area near the former military garrison island of Corregidor and was off Mariveles, Bataan.
