New fruit trees can be planted as soon as the autumn weather sets in.

Create a crocus carpet — scatter the bulbs on the lawn and use a planter to dig them in, then replace the turf.

Clear leaves to discourage slugs. Top tip: put fallen leaves in bin-liners and make holes in them. They will rot down and you can use them for compost next year.

Lift and store dahlia tubers as soon as their foliage has been blackened by the first frost. Cut the hollow stems back down to about four inches above the tuber. This should then be stood upside down to allow any water to drain out..
