Gulfport Vs. Biloxi Takin’ It to the Streets: Tribe, Admirals Primed for Traditional Rivalry

November 7, 2007

By Doug Barber, The Sun Herald, Biloxi, Miss.

Nov. 7–Biloxi and Gulfport renew their football rivalry for the 84th time Friday night, and more than bragging rights is on the line for the Indians.

Biloxi (3-6, 3-3 in region) has a shot at taking fourth place in Region 4-5A but needs a victory at Biloxi Stadium to stay in contention.

Gulfport (1-8, 1-5) is out of the playoff race but would like to maintain its supremacy in the series. Gulfport leads the series 48-31-4, and has won 20 of the last 23 meetings on the gridiron.

Biloxi fans will try to keep up with the Petal-Pascagoula game, which will affect Biloxi’s playoff chances. A Petal loss puts the Indians in the playoffs but a Petal win by a touchdown or more would put Petal in the postseason.

“We haven’t talked a lot about the playoff scenario with the kids,” Biloxi coach Steve Jones said. “We’ve told the kids we need to take care of our own business and let it fall where it may. We don’t have any control over other games.

“The fact is that it is the Gulfport game.”

In other words, bragging rights on the line.

Gulfport coach Marcus Wood said it isn’t hard to get his kids motivated. Gulfport pulled out a thrilling 27-22 victory a year ago over Biloxi at Milner Stadium.

“The kids are excited,” Wood said. “It is a big traditional rivalry. In this one, you can throw out records and stats.”

Gulfport runs a spread offense out of the shotgun, orchestrated by quarterback Andrew Rose. Biloxi counters with a double-wing and I-set with a wingback.

“You can run everything of the double wing out of the I,” Jones said. ” Brandon (Payton) has battled an injury the last two or three weeks, and is pretty close to 100 percent. He doesn’t have to make as much of a cut out of the I.

“Also, I think the I (formation) has helped Sean (Murphy) on play-action passes. He has been a lot more accurate the last few weeks.”

Wood said the Admirals know they have to stop the running of Payton, the passing of Murphy and the big-play pass receiving of Devron Spain. Wood looks for leadership from defenders Tyree Smith and Adam Reynolds.

“Biloxi’s got some impact players: Big (D.J.) Fluker, Devron Spain, and Sean Murphy has played well down the stretch.

“The defensive is well-coached. Coach (Charles) Sabbatini does a good job and Coach (Jerry) Fremin has done a fantastic job with the offensive line.

“We need to capitalize when we can. We’ve struggled with that. We’ve had a hard time getting over the hump this year. We must make sure we are sound in the kicking game and convert our opportunities.”

Gulfport quarterback Andrew Rose has thrown for 1,206 yards with 10 touchdowns. His favorite targets are Bryant Lavender (33 catches, 534 yards) and Stephon Johnson (32 catches, 404 yards). Ricky Floyd has run for 908 yards.

“Gulfport is very talented and they do a lot offensively,” Jones said. “You have to defend the whole field.

“They’d love nothing more than beat us and ruin our (playoff) chances.

“We’ve told the kids that when we get to the rival game, we have to focus on ourselves and eliminate our mistakes.”

The last time Gulfport High went into a season finale with one victory was 1975, and they were the Commodores in those days.
