CSX Transportation Provides Update on Derailment at Anacostia River

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation said today that operations to contain and clean up last Friday's derailment over the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. are progressing on schedule.

Working in close cooperation with several federal and district agencies -- including the Metro D.C. fire and police departments, the D.C. Department of the Environment, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. National Park Service, and the U.S. Park Police - the following actions have taken place:

* Teams have been working to remove derailed cars from the bridge and to ensure that the bridge structure is safe. That phase of the clean up project is now being finalized. * Around-the-clock monitoring of the water quality is being conducted. At this time, water conditions remain normal. * Preparations for safe removal of the rail cars and coal from the river are underway. Once permitting is obtained, this will include the installation of protective environmental barriers in the water to prevent sediments and other materials from moving downstream during the clean up. Removal of rail cars and coal will begin only after permitting is granted.

CSXT has two independent bridge structures that run parallel over the Anacostia River. Each bears the weight of one line of tracks. The incident occurred on one of the two structures, which, as noted in a prior statement, was out of service prior to the incident. The other parallel bridge has been put back in service.
