North Sea Storm blows off containers from ship

BERLIN, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) — The first strong storm over the North Sea this autumn has swept 45 empty containers off a freighter on the way from German port of Hamburg to France, but otherwise the storm did less damage than feared on Friday, German news agency DPA reported.

Exact location of the lost containers from the Panamanian- registered NYK Antares has yet to be determined, but officials believed that they were off the Dutch coast.

On the German North Sea island of Helgoland, hundreds of thousands cubic meters of sand might have been washed off the beach, local officials said. Ferry services between German North Sea islands and mainland had to be canceled temporarily due to thestorm on Friday.

In Hamburg, high water of more than three meters above mean wasregistered. Although some low-lying areas were flooded along the coastal area, no serious damages have been reported.
