Applications Sought for Timber Harvest
BARING – The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge plans to start a timber harvesting operation on 90 acres of forest beginning this winter.
Timber harvesting is conducted as part of the refuge’s forest management program to provide future habitat for wildlife that require young forest and to diversify the age structure of the forest. Harvesting will be conducted by clear-cutting blocks or strips of forest ranging from 2 to 7 acres.
A public drawing to select timber harvesters will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the conference room at the refuge headquarters building.
Harvesters must possess the necessary equipment to cut the timber in a timely fashion during the winter months and have a contract with a wood product company. They also must be able to meet all requirements listed in the special conditions for timber harvesting permits.
Those interested in applying for a permit should contact the refuge office at 454-7161 during normal business hours. Permits will be awarded using a lottery system.
