HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Terence G. Stemmler, a veteran of more than 20 years with the state Bureau of Forestry, has been named district forester of the Gallitzin State Forest District, based in Cambria County.
"Terry brings a wealth of knowledge to his new Gallitzin post of timbering, forest regeneration and research efforts under way in our more than 2.1 million acres of state forestland," said Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Michael DiBerardinis. "His progression through the bureau management ranks has been marked by consistently demonstrated administrative skills."
Besides forest fire protection and service forestry programs in the district's five-county area, Stemmler oversees two major state forest tracts totaling 15,336 acres in Cambria, Indiana, and northern Bedford and Somerset counties. Headquartered in Ebensberg, Cambria County, the district also includes Blair County.
One of 20 state forest districts across the state, Gallitzin is named in honor of Dimetrius Augustine Gallitzin, the so-called "Prince-Priest of the Alleghenies" who established a mission at Loretto in Cambria Country in 1795. Home of the "John P. Saylor,""Lost Turkey" and other trails well-known to hikers, Gallitzin state forestland also is popular with hunters, anglers and others seeking outdoors recreation.
"I'm honored to be selected for the position and look forward to working with the dedicated Gallitzin State Forest District staff," Stemmler said. "Co-workers like these will help ensure the success of my two major goals: to see the staff work as a team to address the resource and those who enjoy it; and to better enable the Bureau of Forestry to carry out its mission."
Stemmler, 51, began his career with the Bureau of Forestry in the early 1980s working as a Young Adult Conservation Corp (YACC) foreman at Camp Quehanna, Clearfield County. He worked for nearly five years as a field forester with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, operating out of its southwest district office in Ligonier, Westmoreland County. In 1987 he transferred to the Elk State Forest in Emporium and worked as a timber management and service forester. In 2002, Stemmler was named operations assistant for the Tioga State Forest District, based in Wellsboro, Tioga County.
A native of Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Stemmler holds a bachelor's degree in forest science from Penn State.
Stemmler replaces Robert E. Schweitzer, who retired.
