Los Angeles Port Pollution, Int'L Trade & Goods Movement Conference This Weekend

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Trade, Health and Environment Impact Project, a collaboration of community organizations including Coalition For A Safe Environment, Long Beach Alliance for Children With Asthma, East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, Center for Community Action & Environmental Justice and university partners USC, UCLA and Occidental College, is sponsoring a two-day "Moving Forward Conference" on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1 at the Carson Community Center, 801 E. Carson Street in Carson. The conference is free and open to the public. On- site registration begins on Friday at 7:30 a.m.
More than 600 participants from around the world will be attending the Moving Forward Conference, which will address local community issues related to ports, international trade, goods movement transportation corridors and distribution centers and their negative impacts on public health from air pollution, noise, traffic congestion and blight.
The most up-to-date and comprehensive scientific public health research findings on port pollution will be presented at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Sessions on community and labor perspectives and the impacts of economic globalization will also be held. The public is encouraged to participate in open mike sessions throughout the day.
Workshops will include an introduction to goods movement, international trade ports, railroad & freeway expansion, trucking & trade routes, distribution centers and warehouses. Community mobilization workshops, land use decisions, impacts on climate change and alternative technologies to reduce environmental and public health impacts will also be held.
