‘Plant a Tree to Offset Christmas Lights’
Residents of a Barry housing estate have been urged to plant a tree to offset the damage their Christmas lights could do to the environment.
Environment campaigner Rob Curtis, a councillor for Barry’s Gibbonsdown estate, said: “There are organisations which will calculate the carbon footprint left by people’s Christmas lights over the festive period. They can offset the damage by tree planting or supporting renewable energy projects.
“By just donating to an environment charity like the Woodland Trust people can reduce their Christmas carbon footprint and help save our environment.”
Coun Curtis is paying to offset the CO2 released by the Christmas lights on King Square in the centre of Barry by planting a tree in Porthkerry Park.
The lights will account for around a quarter of a tonne of carbon dioxide
