Dec. 12–Feed will help needy Manteca families

Hunters and fishers are donating all sorts of big game and fish to support Jim Costa’s Wild-Game Feed on Friday.

The extraordinary lunch at Manteca Trailer and Motorhome, 2060 E. Yosemite Ave., will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with proceeds going to support 150 needy families in the Manteca area with food, gift certificates and toys.

“The wild-game feed is free and open to the public, but we do ask for voluntary donations that go directly for food and gifts for less-privileged families and children,” Costa said. “Without community support — last year we served close to 1,000 people — the event doesn’t fly.

“We’ve got 80 workers who cook, serve, maintain tables and keep the crowd flowing smoothly. It’s all about sportsmen trying to help kids and their families at Christmas.”

Raising trout

Kokanee Power, a nonprofit group that tries to improve fishing in foothill reservoirs, has installed two large pens at New Melones Lake Marina and, over the next five months, will raise 2,000 rainbow and brown trout that will be released when they reach 3 to 4 pounds each. This is the sixth year Kokanee Power has operated a pen-rearing project at New Melones.

“Their efforts have been positive,” said Melanie Lewis at Glory Hole Sports in Angels Camp. “The quality of the trout is real good.”

Marine life protection

Resources secretary Mike Chrisman announced the order of three remaining study regions to implement California’s Marine Life Protection Act by 2011. Data collection will begin in the MLPA South Coast (Point Conception south to the Mexican border) in early 2008, followed by the North Coast (Alder Creek north to theOregon border) and the San Francisco Bay (from the Golden Gate Bridge northeast to the Carquinez Bridge).

Said Chrisman: “The announcement represents a milestone that we have achieved together — scientists, fishermen, elected officials and environmentalists — all working for the benefit and future of our ocean and its marine life.”
