Los Angeles to Dump Water From Reservoirs

Drought-stricken Los Angeles is dumping 600 million gallons of water because it poses a small cancer risk from an unexpected chemical reaction.
Water in the Silver Lake and Elysian reservoirs showed elevated levels of the suspected carcinogen bromate -- the result of a combination of intense sunlight, bromide naturally present in groundwater and chlorine used to kill bacteria, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
The danger was minimal because bromate poses a small cancer risk only after being ingested daily over a lifetime, said state health officials. The two reservoirs were removed from service in October and are to be drained and cleaned before being refilled, the Times reported.
The 600,000 people served by the reservoirs are using water from the Invanhoe reservoir in the meantime.
