Replying to Call of the Wild
By JENNY LITTLE
CHIMP sanctuaries in Uganda and hydroelectricity generators in central Asia may appear to have little to do with the maker of all- terrain vehicles.
But Land Rover sponsors these and other projects that offset carbon emissions produced by its manufacturing and its vehicles.
In Uganda, the company backs projects relating to deforestation a factory that produces cooking stoves using less charcoal and a sanctuary that rehomes chimpanzees orphaned by habitat destruction and the hunting of older chimps for bush meat and the exotic pet trade.
Land Rover has committed Pounds 700 million over five years to clean up its environmental act.
Offsetting allows companies to purchase credits for every ton of carbon they are unable to reduce. These credits pay for schemes that help cut global emissions.
