OTTAWA - After almost two years in power, the federal Tories have not delivered a report on the country's water supply that's required each year by law.
The Liberals before them also violated the Canada Water Act, which calls for annual assessments of how crucial water resources are managed. The last report posted on Environment Canada's website dates back to 2001-2002.
It offered an update on efforts across Canada to protect drinking water, clean up the Great Lakes and track water use.
Liberal water critic Francis Scarpaleggia says the importance of safeguarding precious water supplies is a concern on par with climate change.
He says Ottawa needs a junior water minister to help draw attention to an issue that has not received its due.
The Conservatives have promised a clean-water strategy, including $11 million to clean up the Great Lakes Basin, but have announced few details.
