Great Lakes Water Levels Hit Low

Water levels in lakes Michigan and Huron in the United States and Canada have hit near-record lows.
Lake Michigan measured 575 feet on Christmas Eve, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration gauges, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said. Lakes Michigan and Huron, which meet at the Straits of Mackinac, are technically one body of water, and share measurements.
The recorded low for Lake Michigan, in 1964, was two inches higher than the Christmas Eve reading, but that figure is a monthly average. The lake's historic peak in 1986 was 6 feet higher.
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm asked the Army Corps of Engineers in October to begin design on a dam-like structure for the St. Clair River, but such an intervention could affect downstream water levels in lakes Erie and Ontario.

Posted by mawishka on 01/08/2008, 14:33 That's all on this article? No information about why or how often this happens or whether the lake levels will rise again? I lived in Michigan all my life and have seen some dry years in my time.. Could possibly some of this drop be due to the corporations, like Nestle's, that are now legally allowed to suck up our ground water as long as we, the people, can't prove what affect it has on our land or community or water shed? It's possible. I WOULD like our Governor to put something on the St. Clair River.. It is so polluted that any type of dam-like structure might save some of us from being poisoned.. I lived down there in my youth and remember them closing the private beach for good because of the health hazard it posed upon us due to exposure from the water..They did nothing then and years later when it began to stink and act like a chemical instead of a lake, I believe they started taking action. They waited that long.. Too bad for us.. |
