Habitat ReStore Sells 56 of 70 Appliances Donated By Skyline in Just 24 Hours, Raising $4,000 for Habitat for Humanity

Within 24 hours after Skyline Retirement Community (www.skylinerc.com) donated 35 refrigerators and 35 stoves to Omaha's Habitat ReStore, 56 of the appliances were sold, generating approximately $4,000 for Habitat for Humanity.
The appliances, removed from Skyline's Manor building on December 27, are being donated as the community begins its $50 million-plus development and expansion project. The plan includes replacing Skyline's Villa building, opened in 1973, with 126 brand-new apartments. In addition, 160 apartments in Skyline's second building, the Manor, will be renovated. The Habitat ReStore retail outlet offers affordable home improvement materials to the public and funnels all proceeds directly into creating more Habitat for Humanity homes in Omaha.
"Skyline is proud of its history in serving the Omaha community with excellent care for seniors. Now, as we undertake our development project to give Skyline and its residents a bright future, we are happy to give back to the greater community in a new way," said Tim Smith, executive director of Skyline. "Habitat for Humanity is highly respected for its contributions to Omaha and we look forward to assisting the Habitat ReStore in any way we can."
This donation is the first in a planned collaboration between Skyline and the Habitat ReStore. As renovations to the community progress, Skyline will donate all salvageable materials, including doors, bathroom and closet doors, closet rods, shelves, light fixtures and sinks. Habitat ReStore volunteers will be able to gather and sell any items in good working condition for use in home improvement projects.
"We are excited to provide these appliances for affordable home improvements," said David Klitz, Habitat ReStore director. "Most importantly, we're creating the opportunity to build more homes -- simple, decent, affordable homes -- for Omaha citizens. We are in a constant battle against poverty housing and our collaboration with Skyline will contribute significantly to our efforts in serving the Omaha community."
Additional construction in Skyline's $50 million development will include a new wellness and fitness center, and The Lodge at Skyline where skilled nursing services will be provided. Designed to look and feel like a welcoming and comfortable house instead of a hospital, The Lodge will offer eight sections called neighborhoods, each with a hearth room, home-style kitchen and private rooms.

About Habitat ReStore
Habitat ReStores are retail outlets open to the public in which quality used and surplus building materials are sold at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within the community. Established in 2000, the Omaha Habitat ReStore this year raised enough money to build an entire house. Materials sold by Habitat ReStores are usually donated from building supply stores, contractors, demolition crews or from individuals who wish to show their support for Habitat. In addition to raising funds, ReStores help the environment by rechanneling good, usable materials into use.
