Poll: Swedes More Supportive of Nuke Power
January 21, 2008
Nuclear power is enjoying significant new public support in Sweden, a new poll reported Monday.
The survey commissioned by the newspaper Dagens Nyheter showed 48 percent of Swedes contacted supported the construction of new nuclear plants opposed to 39 percent who said they were opposed and 13 percent undecided.
The Local said the figures stood out because previous surveys found public support levels for nuclear power at no higher than 39 percent. Dagens Nyheter said it was also the first time the question of building four proposed plants was directly asked in the poll.
Sweden is considering proposals to build four plants despite sentiment among lawmakers in the Rikstag to phase out nuclear power nationwide.
