THE Save Our Seas campaign was launched by The Scotsman for effective laws to protect Scotland’s marine environment.

More than 1,000 readers have pledged their support and backing has come from the main environmental groups, represented by Scottish Environment LINK.

The campaign’s objectives are to:

Set up a network of marine reserves and protected areas to properly safeguard sites such as St Kilda, the Sound of Mull and others.

Introduce a marine planning system, effectively zoning areas for appropriate use. This will safeguard fishing grounds from offshore wind farm and other developments and allow humans to exploit the seas in a sustainable way.

Create a single marine management group to administer this system efficiently.

Give Scotland control of conservation to the 200-mile boundary with international waters.

Scotland is in charge of conservation up to 12 miles offshore, while the UK covers the area from 12 to 200 miles.
