Coast Guard Blamed in Oil Spill Report

Posted on: Monday, 28 January 2008, 09:00 CST

A report on the response to a Nov. 7 oil spill in San Francisco Bay blasted the U.S. Coast Guard's media response and its handling of volunteers.

Top Coast Guard officials who reviewed the report said the assessment praised the cleanup effort but criticized the Coast Guard for not notifying the media until nearly 12 hours after the spill and for turning away local volunteers, the San Francisco Chronicle said Monday.

The top Coast Guard official in California, Rear Adm. Craig Bone, said the agency took criticism as well for underestimating the size of the spill.

Bone said the report clearly will identify areas with regard to communications, with regard to maximum utilization of resources ... including volunteers, adding, There won't be any surprises along those lines.

The report didn't single out any agency or individual nor did it suggest the cause of the 58,000-gallon spill but it does highlight 100 lessons learned and 128 recommendations for response improvement, Bones said.

The freighter Cosco Busan hit the Bay Bridge 8:30 a.m., Nov. 7. Officials estimated the size of the spill at 140 gallons and didn't notify the public until 9 p.m.
