TORONTO - Provincial police in southwestern Ontario were advising motorists Wednesday night to stay off the roads as a winter storm swept across the province.
Police say heavy snow left numerous vehicles stranded throughout the area including along Highway 401. Earlier Wednesday night, provincial police said they had responded to nearly 600 collisions and "traffic hazards" during the day.
No serious injuries have been reported.
Winter-storm and freezing-rain warnings remain in effect across southern Ontario as the region is deluged with snow, rain and freezing rain.
Pearson Airport reported numerous delays and cancellations and passengers were being advised to call ahead to check on their flight status, including Thursday morning flights.
Hundreds of school buses in eastern Ontario, the Toronto area and in the Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton regions are cancelled because of hazardous driving conditions.
