Indiana's Governor Signs Bill to Help Protect Great Lakes Waters

Posted on: Wednesday, 20 February 2008, 21:00 CST

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has signed a measure letting Indiana join a regional compact to protect the waters of the Great Lakes.

Indiana's General Assembly earlier passed the bill that protects water from being siphoned out of the Great Lakes watershed. Indiana is the first among the eight states bordering the five Great Lakes to sign the measure into law.

Minnesota and Illinois have also ratified the agreement.

The Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec have approved separate but similar agreements.

The compact instructs the Great Lakes states to regulate water use and adopt conservation plans.

The rules could affect everything from sewage treatment to auto manufacturing.
