MARSHFIELD – The Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary has grown by about 30 acres thanks to a land donation to the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s South Shore Sanctuaries by residents Arnon and Constance Gerard.

The parcel, once part of Gerard Turkey Farm on Ocean Street, will now be part of the sanctuary for Marshfield’s rare and endangered species.

The Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary includes more than 500 acres of grassland, woodland and wetland off Webster Street. The donated land includes tidal marsh habitat and about a half-mile of frontage on the Green Harbor River.

“We are quite excited,” said South Shore Sanctuaries Director Susan MacCallum.

“This donation is another great show of support and interest in land protection.”

MacCallum said the donated land was among several parcels deemed highest priorities for protection in Massachusetts Audubon’s Land Protection Plan for the sanctuary. It also had been identified by the state’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program as a site for rare and endangered species.
