The state Environmental Protection Agency keeps track of industrial chemical releases and publishes the information in an online database for public awareness. The EPA has just released the information for 2006. (Search the database.)

Top five chemicals released, in pounds:

Hydrochloric acid: 2.67 million

Sulfuric acid: 577,017

Hydrogen Fluoride: 173,537

Methanol: 160,532

Ammonia: 156,967.

Top five sources, by pounds:

Merrimack Station, Bow (Public Service of New Hampshire): 3 million

Schiller Station, Portsmouth (PSNH): 429,901

Fraser Pulp Mill, Berlin: 247,414

Wausau Paper, Groveton: 66,701

Newington Station, Newington (PSNH): 46,587.
