Conservation Group Reaches 75 Years
The Dubuque County Conservation Society will celebrate its 75th anniversary on Saturday, April 5, with a public reception at the Swiss Valley Nature Center.
In 1933, a group of Dubuque’s citizens organized the society to protect the only large stand of White Pine in Iowa, near Luxemburg. Its efforts succeeded in the establishment of White Pine Hollow State Forest and Preserve.
Over the past 75 years, the society has been involved in numerous conservation and environmental projects, including Swiss Valley Park, the Leo McLaughlin Habitat Area, contributing to the White Water Canyon land acquisition, Camp Klaus and the protection of the Mississippi River.
