Fresh Lease of Life for 12 Lakes
BANGALORE: The BDA will rejuvenate 12 lakes around the city at a cost of Rs 25 crore, and has sought funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN-NURM).
Announcing this during the World Water Day celebrations, organized by BDA at Rachenahalli Lake on Saturday, BDA commissioner H Siddaiah said while 35% of assistance would be sought from the Centre and state government, 30% would come in as private investment.
The lakes to be restored are at Ramasandra, Kommaghatta, Ullal, Talaghatapura, Konasandra, Kottanur, Somapura, Rachenahalli, Jakkur, Venkateshapura, Mallathahalli and Sampigehalli.
The programme will involve desilting, de-weeding, preventing sewage from entering lakes, protecting them from encroachments, sustaining habitats for aquatic birds and marine life, and monitoring water quality. Around 350 students from colleges participated. Later, they removed weeds from Rachenahalli Lake.
