WASHINGTON, April 4, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Advisors from all three presidential campaigns will discuss their candidates’ positions on environmental, energy and climate policy during a panel discussion at the National Press Club on Friday, April 11, 2008.

Political Climate: Energy, Environment and the 2008 Election will be hosted by the Society of Environmental Journalists, with funding from the Environmental Law Institute, National Geographic and BNA.

The panel will include: Jason Grumet, environmental advisor to Sen. Barack Obama and the president and founder of the Bipartisan Policy Council; Todd Stern, advisor to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and a partner at the D.C. law firm WilmerHale; and James Woolsey, former CIA director and Sen. John McCain advisor, and vice president at the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.

National Journal energy/environment reporter Margie Kriz and NPR All Things Considered senior editor Susan Feeney will serve as moderators.

“The environmental stances and records of the presidential candidates have gotten relatively little attention in the campaign coverage so far. This is part of SEJ’s effort to help journalists get up to speed on an issue given little notice,” said Tim Wheeler, SEJ’s president and a reporter with The Baltimore Sun.

“Three candidates with progressive environmental records are vying for the Democratic and Republican presidential nominations this year. We think the public will be interested to hear their advisors talk about the candidates’ views,” said Leslie Carothers, president of the Environmental Law Institute.

The panel discussion will be followed by a sneak preview of the Frontline documentary “Heat,” an examination of what big business is doing to address climate change by award-winning producer Martin Smith. The show will air in fall 2008.

Space is limited at the event, and preference will be given to working journalists. It will be held in the Holeman Lounge and start promptly at 5 p.m. Please RSVP to Carolyn Whetzel at cwhetzel@bna.com. Please include SEJ RSVP in the subject line.

With more than 1300 members, the Society of Environmental Journalists is dedicated to improving the quality, accuracy and visibility of reporting on environmental issues.
