Facial Features Give Away Sexual Motives

Posted on: Wednesday, 9 April 2008, 15:20 CDT

It may be possible to determine the sexual motives of members of the opposite sex based on facial features, researchers said on Wednesday.

For instance, a man with a square jaw, large nose and small eyes may be more likely to be on the prowl for lust rather than love.

The Durham University team studied 700 heterosexual people from Durham, St. Andrews and Aberdeen universities. The study was published in the journal “Evolution and Human Behavior.”

In one study, 72 percent of the 153 participants correctly identified the sexual motives of men and women in their 20s simply by looking at photographs of their faces.

They also found that women who make themselves available for short-term flings tended to have wide eyes and large lips, and were usually viewed as more attractive.

The team’s research confirmed past findings that noted women to view masculine men as cheaters or bad parents.

"This shows that these initial impressions may be part of how we assess potential mates -- or potential rivals -- when we first meet them,” said Dr Lynda Boothroyd, from Durham University's Psychology Department.

"These will then give way over time to more in-depth knowledge of that person as you get to know them better, and may change with age."

Dr
. Ben Jones, from the University of Aberdeen’s Face Research Lab, conducts facial attractiveness experiments to determine various preferences ranging from symmetry to sadness detection.

"Lots of previous studies have shown that people can judge a lot about a person from their face, including things like health and even some personality traits like introversion,” Jones said.

“But this really is the first study to show that people are also sensitive to subtle facial signals about the type of romantic relationships that others might enjoy."
