Baton Rouge Magnet High School Students Win Science Competitions

Posted on: Monday, 7 March 2005, 09:00 CST

Talk about a winning combination.

Some of Baton Rouge Magnet High School's top math and science students captured first-place honors at two regional science competitions in January and February.

Students won first place in the state regional Science Bowl on Jan. 29 in New Orleans and first in the Science Olympiad competition Feb. 19 in Lafayette, said Fran Frost, teacher sponsor at Baton Rouge Magnet High.

The school also won $750 to put toward its science department as a result of the students' winnings, Frost said.

The school's winners will compete in the national Science Bowl April 28 to May 2 in Washington, D.C., and in the National Science Olympiad May 20 to May 21 in Champaign County, Ill.

Students competing in the Science Bowl prepared for a quiz bowl- type competition in which students were divided into two teams of four students and answered questions in math, biology, astronomy, chemistry, physics and general and computer science, Frost said.

The Science Olympiad team participated in similar subjects but students were tested using a variety of methods including paper/ pencil tests, lab experiments and designing and building devices, Frost said.

Students spend a lot of their own time preparing for the two competitions, Frost said.

Science Bowl team members "practice on their own and as a team. They get together at each other's houses and they do outside studying on different topics. They'll delegate topics like earth science so they can be prepared," she said.

The students were determined to win, Frost said.

"They won because of the hard work and studying. They take these competitions seriously," she said.
