Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Announces New Chief Program Officer for Its Environmental Conservation Programs

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (www.moore.org) today announced the appointment of Daniel C. Nepstad, Ph.D. as the new chief program officer for its environmental conservation programs. The Foundation's environmental conservation programs focus on multi-year strategic initiatives.

"I am very pleased to welcome Dan to the Foundation's management team," said Steve McCormick, president, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. "We look forward to his leadership of our environmental conservation programs and to his counsel across all of our programs. Dan has worked closely with our Andes-Amazon initiative team for six years. We have come to know well his potential, not only as a world class scientist, but also as a broad-gauged and bold innovator and advocate for transformative conservation policy. His experience, vision, sense of urgency and leadership style will help us achieve positive outcomes for future generations."

Nepstad, a tropical forest ecologist, comes to the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation from Woods Hole Research Center, where he is a Senior Scientist. In addition, he is both Scientist and Founding President of IPAM--Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia (Amazon Institute of Environmental Research), Belém, Brazil. He is also Co-Founder of Aliança da Terra (Land Alliance), and Visiting Professor, Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro. Nepstad is a past recepient of the Pew Scholar Award in Conservation and Environment.

"Dan Nepstad is an outstanding leader in environment in all its complexity. The Moore Foundation is fortunate to have him in such an important role," said Tom Lovejoy, president, The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment.

Nepstad holds a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from Yale University, an M.S. in Plant Ecology/Botany from Michigan State University, and a B.A. in Biology from Kalamazoo College. His scientific and conservation interests include tropical forests, climate change, forest fire, globalization, natural resource policy, and the "taming" of agro-industry. He has published over 100 scientific articles and books.
