New Book Ready, Set, SCIENCE! Highlights Critical Research on Science Teaching & Learning

Posted on: Monday, 21 April 2008, 12:00 CDT

RAHWAY, N.J., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ready, Set, SCIENCE! - Putting Research To Work In K-8 Science Classrooms, a new publication from the National Research Council, developed and published with support from the Merck Institute for Science Education (MISE), http://www.mise.org/, explains how the latest research on teaching and learning can be put into practice in K-8 science classes. Using examples and case studies, it guides teachers and science specialists in creating curriculum and classroom experiences based on the findings published in the National Research Council's (NRC) 2006 report TAKING SCIENCE TO SCHOOL: Learning and Teaching Science in Grades K-8.

"READY, SET, SCIENCE! translates the National Research Council's findings into a teacher-friendly, research-based model of what it means for children to understand and participate in science," says Carlo Parravano, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Merck Institute for Science Education and a recognized science education reform expert. "This book is a ground-breaking synthesis of theory and practice -- a volume that clearly outlines steps educators can take to bolster their efforts to make science come alive for young students."

Continues Dr. Parravano, "Based on the Merck Institute for Science Education's 15 years of partnerships with New Jersey and Pennsylvania school districts, we've found that children learn science better if classroom activities resemble how scientists operate in the real world. Ready, Set, SCIENCE! shares invaluable lessons that readers can incorporate into their curriculum."

According to Dr. Parravano, exposing all children to well-taught science is vital, not only to help improve the below-satisfactory reading, mathematics and problem-solving skills of many U.S. students, but also to strengthen society's efforts through enhanced science education to address global issues from disease treatment to environmental protection.

"Early science exposure builds a foundation upon which continued science or other academic learning can be built. Beyond enabling us to get ahead and compete in the 21st century workforce, scientific knowledge empowers us to be critical thinkers and engaged citizens in a democracy."
